Synopsis - Following Damian Szylin, an amateur bodybuilder, who is prepping for his first competition at the age of 20. He discusses his motivations, diet, training regime and gives advice for people who want to get into body building. We get a close look at how he views the outside world and his judgement on what other people, including his family and friends, think of him and how it has affected his relationships with those people.

Target Audience - I will aim my documentary at people who are into bodybuilding and/or the gym. They will require some knowledge of fitness, however, the documentary will explain everything well enough so that someone without this knowledge will not be lost and be able to follow the story and learn some terminology.

Secondary research

I watched these documentaries on YouTube to give me an idea of shots, techniques, openings and things I should include and not include.
Some of them were the style I'm also going for, so they helped me with structuring my own documentary and how, where and when to use filler gaps and how to edit and film my shots.
Others were not the style I was going for and were focused too much on the actual competition and not so much on the lifestyle, training regime or personality. This was good as it taught me what things to avoid to not make it slow paced or boring.

Primary Research

I asked 21 people who know very little to nothing about bodybuilding and the lifestyle of a bodybuilder, what intreges them the most about a bodybuilders lifestyle, in order to see if the general public have one big common doubt in the lifestyle of a bodybuilder. These are the results I got:
  • Diet - Why do they eat so much food?
  • Training - How do they keep such high energy levels throughout the whole workout?
  • Dedication - What's their motivation and inspiration to stick to it for so long?
  • Community - How come the bodybuilding community is so tight/close?
  • Body Image - Do they like how they look?
  • Mental State - What are their goals and aspirations?
These were the most common responses by the general public. This will help me come up with some answers for the interview and also answer some/all the questions and doubts the public has.

Permissions

Some of my music in the documentary will be from The Hustle Standard. I contacted him before for a previous project and he gave me permission to use his music as long as it's nothing commercial and give him credit.

Some of my music will be from Monstercat Media. They have a licensing where the music from their artists can be used freely as long as it is not altered and given credit.

I originally wanted to film the documentary at the gym Damian trains in. However, the manager of the gym did not give me permission to film at the location, so I had to find a different place.
I decided to film at Gymworld in Middlesbrough College as it would have much fewer people in it, would make the interview much easier and better and it was also easily accessible for both of us.
I talked to Craig Burton, the manager of Gymworld and was given permission to film.

I organised to film on Saturday 14th.

Damian had to fill out a PAR-Q and have an induction at the gym in order to prevent any injuries and be made aware of the equipment. Unfortunately I do not have a copy of the PAR-Q.
I did not need any assistance during the shooting of this and was able to transport the equipment and film it all by myself.

Evaluation

I thought that the finished product was very good and I was pleased with the way I shot and edited it.
After receiving feedback from many friends, the biggest concern I have is that my editing style has been influenced too much by YouTube videos and doesn't fit much the TV style. I don't personally think it's a bad thing, as I like my unique style, however for this assignment it did not fully fit the specified form.
The music is what primarily gives away that it is not a professional piece of work and rather that of a student, it also heavily reflect my YouTube style.

The thing I was mostly pleased with was my filming. I thought that the filming technique was very unique to a bodybuilding film, and is something which is usually not used for any other type of film or documentary.
The framing on the documentary is also very good in my opinion and does not seem off at any point. Especially during the interview, in which the equipment of the gym is not off putting and doesn't distract. However, the interviewer and the audio engineer (same person) are slightly visible in the shot due to the reflection of one of the mirrors. If spotted this can be very distracting and personally I am rather annoyed that this has happened and wasn't avoided or checked, however the main focus is on the interviewee, so it is somewhat hard to spot.

Although this is not too big of an issue, it is still irritating. During the interview there were a few fans switched on, which obviously picked up on the microphone and caused background noise. I was able to remove it slightly in post production, however it is still present. Luckily during the second and third take of the interview I turned the fans off, so those answers did not have any background noise.
